Portco Compliance and In-House Counsel Salary Trends in 2024 — A Need for Competitive Compensation

Across all positions, the likelihood of compensation-related job changes were high. Even among Senior Counsel, the least likely to report considering a change, over a third of respondents rated the likelihood of pursuing a new position as “high” or “very high.” General Counsel were the next lowest, with 43% reporting they would be likely to pursue higher compensation. At least half of the Managing Counsel and Chief Compliance officers surveyed reported they were likely to pursue new job opportunities due to dissatisfaction with compensation.

Portfolio Company Salary Trends You Need To Know

1. Likelihood of Compensation-Related Job Search

Across all positions, Senior Counsel were the least likely to pursue new job opportunities due to dissatisfaction with compensation. In contrast, Managing Counsel were the most likely to report interest in a new position, with 54% reporting “likely” or “very likely” to begin a compensation-related job search.

2. Other Responsibilities

A vast majority of General Counsel (86%) hold additional roles beyond legal, commonly serving as Corporate Secretary (73%) and Chief Compliance Officer (47%).

3. Salary Increases by Industry and Revenue

Overall, counsel and CCOs in the industrial and manufacturing industries saw the highest base salary increases over 2023. Target bonuses varied substantially based on company size and revenue.
