BarkerGilmore 2026 Chicago In-House Legal Leadership Compensation Report

New research provides compensation benchmarks and career insights for General Counsel, Managing Counsel, and Senior Counsel across the Chicago market.

BarkerGilmore, the nation’s only executive search and talent advisory firm dedicated exclusively to the in-house legal and compliance profession, has released its 2026 Chicago In-House Legal Leadership Compensation Report, providing a detailed look at compensation and career trends among senior in-house legal professionals in the Chicago market.

The report examines 2025 compensation for General Counsel, Managing Counsel, and Senior Counsel, including base salary, cash bonus, long-term incentives, and total compensation. The research also explores tenure and career mobility, offering a broader view of the professionals who make up Chicago’s in-house legal leadership market.

Across the full sample, median total compensation is $1,074,750 for General Counsel, $487,250 for Managing Counsel, and $353,000 for Senior Counsel. The findings also reveal considerable variation in compensation across organization revenue levels, reinforcing the importance of company scale when evaluating legal compensation.

Among the report’s findings:

  • General Counsel command the highest median total compensation at $1,074,750, more than twice the median for Managing Counsel at $487,250. Median total compensation for Senior Counsel is $353,000.
  • Company size plays an important role in compensation. Across the positions studied, the report provides detailed compensation benchmarks by organization revenue, illustrating how salary, bonus, long-term incentives, and total compensation differ across organizations of varying sizes.
  • Chicago’s in-house legal professionals show considerable tenure with their employers. More than half (54%) have been with their current company for one to five years, while 39% have been with their organization for six years or longer.
  • Most respondents are established in their current positions. Nearly 69% have held their current role for one to five years, while 13% have been in the position for six to ten years.
  • The majority of respondents report a relatively low likelihood of entering the job market. Approximately 67% indicated a “low” or “very low” probability of conducting a new job search, compared with 33% who reported a “high” or “very high” probability.

“Chicago has a deep and established in-house legal community, and this research gives us a more detailed view of how organizations across the market are compensating their legal leaders,” said John Gilmore, Managing Partner of BarkerGilmore. “What stands out is the importance of looking beyond the title alone. Organizational size, the scope of the role, and the structure of the compensation package all contribute to significant differences in how legal leaders are rewarded. We hope these benchmarks give both employers and legal professionals useful context as they evaluate the market.”

Rather than relying on a single market average, the report provides compensation data across the 25th, 50th, 75th, and 90th percentiles, with additional segmentation by organization revenue. This allows employers and legal professionals to consider a broader range of compensation outcomes and better account for differences in role and organizational scale.

The report also provides insight into the composition and career patterns of Chicago’s in-house legal community. Together with the compensation findings, these data offer a more complete picture of a market where many legal professionals have established meaningful tenure with both their organizations and in their current positions.

BarkerGilmore recommends using the findings as a general benchmark rather than a definitive measure of an individual role or compensation package. Compensation can vary considerably based on factors including experience, leadership responsibility, specialized expertise, organization size and performance, industry, and broader economic conditions. Because 33% of respondents work in the financial sector, readers should also consider the composition of the survey sample when interpreting compensation benchmarks.

The 2026 Chicago In-House Legal Leadership Compensation Report is part of BarkerGilmore’s ongoing research into compensation and talent trends affecting the in-house legal profession. The findings are intended to provide employers and legal professionals with greater visibility into a market where reliable, role-specific compensation data can be difficult to obtain.
