New York City legal compensation research provides salary and total compensation benchmarks for General Counsel, Managing Counsel, and Senior Counsel.
BarkerGilmore LLC, the nation’s only executive search and talent advisory firm dedicated exclusively to the in-house legal and compliance profession, has released its 2026 New York City In-House Legal Leadership Compensation Report, providing new NYC General Counsel compensation benchmarks and insights into salary, total compensation, and career trends across the New York City in-house legal market.
Drawing on survey data from more than 340 in-house counsel across a range of industries, seniority levels, and organization sizes in the New York City market, the report examines General Counsel compensation, Managing Counsel compensation, and Senior Counsel compensation in NYC. Total compensation includes base salary, cash bonus, and the estimated value of long-term incentive awards.
The findings show that in-house legal compensation in New York City generally increases with organizational scale and level of responsibility. Across all three positions studied, median total compensation rises as company revenue increases, with some of the most pronounced differences appearing at the General Counsel level.
