Benjamin Mantica brings a distinctive perspective to BarkerGilmore’s executive search practice, shaped by a career spanning military leadership, business operations, and legal practice. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and former Navy officer, Ben developed his leadership philosophy early, gaining firsthand experience in the qualities that enable executives to build strong teams, navigate complex challenges, and drive organizational success.
Before joining BarkerGilmore, Ben served as Chief Operating Officer of a growing business and practiced law, experiences that gave him an appreciation for the intersection of legal expertise and business strategy. With both a Juris Doctor and an MBA, he understands the expectations placed on today’s in-house legal leaders and the importance of identifying executives who can contribute beyond their technical responsibilities.
At BarkerGilmore, Ben draws on this diverse background to help organizations identify exceptional legal and compliance talent. His experience as both a business operator and attorney informs his approach to executive search, allowing him to evaluate candidates through the lens of leadership effectiveness, business acumen, and organizational fit. He is particularly passionate about connecting talented executives with opportunities where they can make a lasting impact on their organizations and the people they lead.
Your career has taken you from serving in the U.S. Navy to entrepreneurship and business operations to practicing law. Tell us about your professional journey and what ultimately led you to executive search.
Each of my professional experiences has prepared me well for my role at BarkerGilmore. Immediately after graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy, I was commissioned as a junior officer and placed in a leadership position. That experience not only allowed me to develop my own leadership skills, but also gave me the opportunity to observe senior leaders firsthand and understand the qualities that distinguish truly effective leaders.
Additionally, having been on both sides of the table, as both a client and an attorney, I was excited by the opportunity to leverage those experiences at BarkerGilmore. Our clients are not simply looking for strong legal talent; they are looking for individuals who can lead teams, influence organizations, and serve as trusted business partners. I believe my background gives me a valuable perspective in helping our clients identify candidates who possess both the legal expertise and leadership capabilities essential to succeeding in the senior roles BarkerGilmore is retained to fill.
You’ve worked across several very different environments: the military, an entrepreneurial venture, and a law firm. How have those experiences shaped the way you think about leadership and what makes an executive successful?
Regardless of profession or industry, the traits of great leaders are largely consistent. My view of leadership is rooted in the belief that the organization is larger than any one individual. Particularly in executive search, it is our responsibility to identify individuals who not only possess exceptional credentials and demonstrate strong legal acumen, but who also understand that leadership is fundamentally about serving something larger than themselves.
The best leaders prioritize the success of the organization and the people they are responsible for over their own individual success. They recognize that their effectiveness is measured not simply by their personal accomplishments, but by the impact they have on their organization, their teams, and those around them. In executive search, our responsibility is to look beyond the résumé and identify those qualities to find executives who have the experience to succeed in the role and the leadership capabilities to elevate the organization and the people they lead.
What attracted you to BarkerGilmore, and what excites you most about joining the team?
BarkerGilmore has enjoyed tremendous success over the past 20 years, but the culture that has been cultivated within the company is what excites me most. Every member of the team is genuinely excited to be part of BarkerGilmore and to play a role in continuing to fuel its growth.
Just as importantly, there is a shared commitment to doing the work the right way. The team is focused not simply on identifying candidates for our clients, but on finding the right candidates, those who will make a meaningful and lasting impact on their organizations. That sense of professional pride is a cornerstone of BarkerGilmore’s culture, and it is incredibly exciting to be part of a team that holds itself to such a high standard.
Before entering legal practice, you served as Chief Operating Officer of a growing business. How does having operated a business influence the way you understand clients’ needs and evaluate executive talent?
My experience on the “other side of the table” has significantly informed how I approach evaluating candidates. Increasingly, in-house legal executives are expected to serve as strategic business partners rather than limit their role solely to providing legal advice. Our clients expect us to identify candidates who can make a meaningful impact on their organizations, and that requires executives who understand the business as well as they understand the law.
My experience helping to run a business reinforced how important it is for lawyers to understand their clients’ businesses, their objectives, and broader strategic priorities. That is particularly important for in-house legal teams, where legal and business considerations are often closely intertwined. It is incumbent upon BarkerGilmore to identify legal executives who not only demonstrate exceptional legal ability, but also possess the business acumen and strategic mindset necessary to contribute to their organizations from day one.
You earned both a J.D. and an MBA. How does that combination, along with your experience as a practicing attorney, shape the perspective you’ll bring to searches for legal and compliance leaders?
Earning both my J.D. and MBA has allowed me to connect with our clients and candidates in a meaningful way. Shared experiences and common ground can be powerful tools for developing relationships and building trust, particularly in executive search, where understanding both the individual and the organization is essential.
My background has given me a strong foundation for understanding the perspectives of both our clients and candidates. It helps me better appreciate our clients’ needs, understand what candidates are looking for in their next opportunity, and ultimately identify individuals whose experience, capabilities, and goals align with what our clients are seeking.
Your military service put you in leadership positions early in your career. What lessons from the Navy have stayed with you, and how do they influence the way you assess leadership today?
As it relates to executive search, two of the most important leadership lessons I learned as a Navy officer were the importance of preparedness and attention to detail. When evaluating talent for our clients, it is critical to determine whether candidates have done their homework and taken the time to understand the company, its business, and the opportunity. Preparation goes beyond simply being ready to answer interview questions; it demonstrates a candidate’s willingness to put in the work necessary to succeed in a potential role.
Attention to detail is equally important. Whether reflected in a résumé, materials provided to the client, knowledge of the organization, or even how a candidate presents themselves, the details matter. Particularly at the executive level, small oversights can undermine an otherwise strong candidacy. My experience in the Navy taught me that preparation and attention to detail are often indicators of how someone will approach greater responsibilities, and those are qualities I look for when evaluating leaders for our clients.
Executive search is ultimately a relationship-driven business. What are you most looking forward to about building relationships with BarkerGilmore’s clients and candidates?
It is an incredible opportunity to connect top legal talent from across the country with some of the most innovative and exciting companies in the United States. What makes executive search particularly rewarding is the ability to make a meaningful impact on both sides of that equation; helping talented legal executives take the next step in their careers while also strengthening the leadership teams of our clients.
The opportunity to positively influence an individual’s career while helping an organization identify a leader who can contribute to its long-term success is incredibly unique. When the right candidate and company come together, the impact can extend well beyond a single placement and create lasting value for everyone involved.
What professional accomplishment or experience are you most proud of, and why?
As a division officer in the Navy, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to lead men and women through three deployments to the Middle East. Successfully completing those deployments while developing and refining my own leadership skills was an incredibly rewarding experience. However, what I am most proud of is that, while accomplishing our mission, I was also able to help the men and women I led achieve their own personal and professional goals. That experience reinforced my belief that leadership is not measured solely by accomplishing the mission, but also by the impact you have on the people you are entrusted to lead.
