Senior women lawyers at the largest US companies are bucking the gender pay gap by outearning their male peers, helped by greater success in negotiating stock awards, an Equilar study found.
Women in the general counsel role were paid about 16% more than men in 2025, almost double the 8.5% premium a year earlier, according to the analysis of pay data for the Equilar 500, a group of the biggest publicly traded companies by revenue. Equilar reviewed annual regulatory disclosures for so-called named executive officers, typically the chief executive officer, chief financial officer and the three highest-paid executives beyond those roles.
