The General Counsel in an AI World: From Advisor to Orchestrator
Mar 11, 2026 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm EDT
Synopsis
As artificial intelligence moved from experimentation to significant enterprise investment in 2025, boards and executive teams became increasingly focused on governance, oversight, and results. In this environment, the role of the General Counsel is evolving from legal advisor to enterprise orchestrator, helping align strategy, risk management, and cross-functional accountability as AI becomes integrated into operations and capital allocation.
In this webinar, Mary Ann Hynes, BarkerGilmore Strategic Advisor and Executive Coach and former Officer and General Counsel of Ingredion Incorporated, IMC Global, Sundstrand, Wolters Kluwer US, and CCH Incorporated; Audrey Rubin, BarkerGilmore Strategic Advisor and Executive Coach and former VP and COO of Aon’s Global Law and Compliance Department, former General Counsel of Apollo Travel Services, and former Chief Legal Officer of Grant Thornton; and Courtney Welton, former SVP and General Counsel of Allstate, draw on their experience leading legal and compliance functions within complex, global organizations.
Rather than revisiting foundational AI questions, the discussion focuses on how General Counsel can apply familiar enterprise risk management disciplines to govern AI as it becomes embedded in operations, decision-making, and capital allocation. Using the COSO ERM framework, the speakers will explore how legal leaders can help align boards, the C-Suite, and cross-functional stakeholders around a practical governance structure for generative AI that supports innovation while ensuring accountability, transparency, and trust, leveraging existing enterprise structures rather than building entirely new ones.
Key topics will include:
- The GC’s elevated role as AI transitions from concept to enterprise investment
- Applying the COSO ERM framework to AI governance, oversight, and board reporting
- Aligning boards, the C-Suite, and cross-functional stakeholders around AI risk, clear decision rights, and accountability mechanisms
- Core components of an effective generative AI governance structure, including policy, inventory and intake processes, monitoring, and vendor oversight
- Monitoring, metrics, and continuous review as AI capabilities mature
Designed to meet General Counsel wherever they are on the AI governance journey, this session offers practical insight for coordinating with confidence across the enterprise and positioning organizations as leaders, not laggards.
